A spokeswoman for a hospital in Slovakia says conjoined twins who underwent an operation to be separated have died.

Dana Kamenicka of Bratislava's Children University Hospital says the two boys who shared one liver died on Friday despite a six-hour operation. Details were not immediately given.

The twins were born on Thursday and doctors said they were forced to operate because of the deteriorating condition of one of the boys. They said before the operation he was unlikely to survive.

Two years ago, Slovak doctors successfully separated twin boys joined at the chest in what was the second operation of the kind in the country. The boys died a couple of months later.

In 2000, doctors successfully separated two baby girls who are still doing well.
