Imagine having five children under the age of two? Any parent might that call it a houseful, in addition to being a handful. But that is now reality for one Plainfield family. Elaine Kaempf had identical triplets December 3. They were conceived naturally about a year after they had twin boys, who were conceived using invitro fertilization. The odds of getting pregnant, naturally, with identical triplets? Experts put the odds at anywhere from 1 in 15 to 1 in 200 million. CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports the family is up to the challenge. The sisters are named Ainsley, Emma and Samantha. Their mom, Elaine, says she was stunned to learn she was pregnant with them. "I just thought I was getting fat.," she says. She wasn't. "We knew there was a possibility," says Elaine Kaempf, "but we didn't think we could get pregnant naturally." Her husband, Dave, says he was more surprised they had gotten pregnant naturally than he was to hear about the triplets. "The triplets," he says, "were just the surprise on top." Now, those surprises are going home together. Doctors say it's remarkable they are doing so well and able to do that. The Kaempfs say a nanny, friends and family will help the now family of seven adjust. "This makes 16 grandchildren," says grandpa Bob Kaempf. "It is overwhelming." Carol Kaempf, the triplets' grandmother, says they are so beautiful but acknowledges they may be difficult to tell apart. Elaine Kaempf says she feels blessed and can't wait for the challenge ahead. "We're so happy," she says, "it just overtakes any other emotion." The triplets were born at Edward Hospital in Naperville on December 3, 2009 at 35 weeks. A spokesperson says that hospital is the number place for births of multiples in the Chicago area outside of Cook County and the city of Chicago. (Edit:Ruby) |
