The twins were born hours after one of Devon's worst snow storms

Firefighters who braved a blizzard to help a pregnant woman have received an award in recognition of their efforts.

Ambulance crews and an RAF helicopter were unable to reach Andrea Dunn when she went into labour with twins at home in North Tawnton, Devon, in February.

A crew from North Tawton, who fitted snow chains to their fire engine, rescued her and took her to hospital.

During the seven-mile (11km), 40 minute drive, the crew of eight had to stop twice to clear fallen trees and debris.

Guests of honour

Within minutes of arriving at Okehampton hospital Mrs Dunn gave birth to healthy twin girls Elizabeth and Stephanie.

She had gone into labour during the middle of a snow storm which saw up to 22ins (55cm) of snow fall in parts of the county.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service's chief fire officer, Lee Howell, presented commendation certificates to the firefighters and control staff who supported the rescue.

Guests of honour, Mr and Mrs Dunn, were also at the ceremony to meet the crew for the first time since the twins were born.
