'Because I was just 34 weeks pregnant, they said the longer the babies were inside the better,' said the new mother-of-two.
'They monitored us carefully and said they would only induce if the babies became distressed.' Contractions continued through the night and into the next morning but still there was no sign of Alfie and Charlie.
'I remember getting a bit upset that morning when they told me I might have to go home.
'I didn't want to do that. I had come into the hospital excited, thinking I was going to meet my boys soon,' said Charlotte, of Old Catton, Norwich.
But Charlotte stayed at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
She was moved into a delivery room on the Monday morning.
'That was when it did start to progress and they gave me pain relief,' recalled Charlotte.
Charlie was supposed to come out first, making him the older twin, but Alfie's tiny hand was tucked round him, as though he was reaching forward to be first born.
'First, they said we could wait a while to see if Alfie's hand went back in.
'Then later they said I could try to give birth to Charlie naturally but there was a good chance I would have to have Alfie by Caesarian section,' said Charlotte. |
