Oxford High crash victims identified

Three Oxford High School teens were killed this morning in a weather-related accident on Joslyn Road in Orion Township, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

Police said the three girls -- all age 14 and from Pontiac -- were being driven to school by a mother. At about 7 a.m., the mother lost control of her 2005 Toyota Camry going northbound on Joslyn, south of Clarkston Road, and was broadsided by a GMC Sierra pickup heading southbound on Joslyn.

Lt. Bruce Naile said Barbara Felder, 39, of Pontiac is in surgery at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital Regional Medical Center. The driver of the truck, Terry Mahan, 40, of Lake Orion was released and is not at fault, he said.

Mahan declined to comment today.

Naile identified the victims as Ashley Felder and twin sisters Sy'mone Analyse Nicole Johnson and Brianna Marie Latreese Johnson.

Oxford Schools Superintendent William Skilling said two of the teens are sisters and the other is a friend.

All, he said, were freshmen.

Police said Felder's daughter, who was wearing a seat belt, was sitting in the front passenger seat and died at the scene. One of the teens in the backseat was ejected from the vehicle. She and the other teen in the rear of the car were pronounced dead at the hospital. It's unclear whether they were wearing seat belts, Naile said.

Naile said the two-lane, snow-covered, icy road was a factor in the accident. He said deputies reported there was heavy snowfall and lots of wind.

"It was dark," Naile said, but the deputy "didn't have any trouble with visibility."

Joslyn Road was closed after the accident, but has been reopened, Naile said.

According to the National Weather Service in White Lake Township, about two inches of snow fell in Orion Township overnight, tapering off at about 7 this morning.

Dave Gurney, a meteorologist with the NWS, wasn't sure if there was snow falling at the time of the crash, however, as the end time of the snow was about the same time of the crash.
