It's getting impossible to like the X Factor

Pub rocker Jamie had flames projected on the back wall, dancers and even a BAND on stage with him. But his rendition of 70s glam-pop classic Get It On sounded more like Mungo Jerry than T-Rex. At least John & Edward were overtly artificial, responding to the suggestion that they're just twins "who have this AMAZING personality," but cannot sing by performing Rock DJ - a song that was mostly talking. The biggest fake of all remains serial killer-scary Danyl. "He just needs to tone a few things down" we were told, which coming from Robbie Williams was pretty bad. Danyl is actually a lot like Robbie. He has that sort of vocal Tourettes. He can't sing without grinning, gurning, winking, basking in the certainty of how good he thinks he is. He reminds me of Robert Downey Junior: his personality is so 'zany'. Everything he does happening in his mind. Nothing is natural. His humility or his hurt at Minogue's comments were particularly bogus. He walked around staring at the ground, holding back 'tears', before clapping the audience with an ersatz emotion that was almost American. It's all an act. And not a very good one. (Edit:Ruby) |
