Williams twins something to see

2010-01-23 Author:Aron Williams Source:redding

It shouldn't matter what color you bleed, you simply must appreciate how special Anthony and James Williams are.

If you bleed Foothill Red, you stand up and tip your cap. If you bleed Anderson Blue, you thank the Almighty you don't have to see the twins twice in league. If you bleed West Valley crimson, you can marvel at the athleticism of the two best athletes this generation.

If you bleed Shasta Purple, you don't have to like them one bit. But you have to acknowledge that James and Anthony single-handedly beat you on Friday. The twins combined for 46 points Friday in the Hornets' 63-43 rivalry win over the Wolves.

James dropped 18 and Anthony torched the Wolves for 28 points, including 16 in the third quarter.

For the rest of us, we simply get to sit and enjoy what -- night-in, night-out -- is the most spine-tingling thing happening in Redding, Chico or Paradise.

Let's face it, folks, it's hard not to gush at just how special the Williams twins are.

Because James and Anthony will be gone next year, hopefully playing basketball at some Division I school.

"I'm a lot better coach because those two guys are here," Enterprise coach Mike Haworth said.

And just the like the void left by Brody Angley, the twins' vacuum will be twice as big.

"Brody was quicker and faster than those two, but they have the length and they can make up for more," Haworth said of his star pupils. "When Brody left, we were like We're never going to see another player like that again.' Now, we may never see twins like this."

Anyone with triplets want to step up and claim the mantle of the next greatest thing?

But that's getting ahead of ourselves.

Sitting in the stands Friday it was hard not to ooh, ahh and gasp. The twins are so gifted. The twins are so dominant. The twins are flat-out exciting.

While Anthony lit up the Wolves in the third period, James also had some highlight-reel moments, too.

Anthony, who was a dismal 1-of-10 in the first half came out in the third period and rolled the scoreboard over like a long-haul trucker's odometer. A 3-pointer to start the period. A trey after a missed shot, a rebound and a kickout from Alex Henderson. A breakway basket followed by two fast break layups, both on an assist from James.

And capped with an acrobatic tip-in of a Jovon Cunningham miss that had the Cirque du Soleil folks shaking their heads.
