Multiple Births Doubled in Nanjing for the past 6 Years

According to the laws of nature, there is a very little rate of pregnancy probability with multiples, just only one 100,000th to one 200,000th.  And twins only account for about 1% of the total population, and triplets 0.1%,   quadruplets one out of every 705,000 people, let alone quintuplets or sextuplets. Then why are there so many twin births in Nanjing? 

Test-tube twin rate up to 40%

Liu Jiayin said that test-tube technology has improved the possibility of having twins in a certain extent. "China has stipulated in 2003 that the hospital must transplant in two embryos if the woman under 35 has the first test-tube surgery." Meanwhile, the parents have options to have two babies if they both survive.

Liu Jiayin made an example that if a couple has been married for 5 years and the wife Wang Yun (a pseudonym) has not been pregnant. She is diagnosed as bilateral oviduct tubes obstruction because of pelvic tuberculosis. After the therapy, the hospital does implemented test-tube surgery for Wang Yun and had nine beautiful with nine embryos. However, doctors think that 1.56-meter-tall WangYun is too small for twins and suggest her to choose only one. But Wang Yun opposes and insists to have twins.

Liu Jiayin said that the reproductive center of her hospital has about 1500 cases of test-tube baby every year, of which the survival rate reaches 1/3, or even 40%. "If everyone woman doesn't want to reduce embryos after the test-tube surgery, there will be nearly 500 cases of twins in her hospital every year."

Fertility drugs abusing 

Besides the reason of test-tube babies, Liu Jiayin said another reason is the abusing of fertility drugs. "Ordinary clomiphene may lead to 5%-7% of multiple births more than twins, and injection HMG may lead to 15% or 20%."

She said that ovulation stimulants are a kind of prescribed drug and people can't get it without doctor's prescriptions. Reporters had an investigation, and they can be found in pharmacies in Henan, Hunan, Guangdong and other provinces and can be bought by mailing. According to an insider, people can buy such drugs in some pharmacies or clinics in Nanjing suburbs too. 

It is said that one reason for the abusing of fertility drug is its cheap price. It costs only several Yuan or at most 60-70 Yuan for imported ones. It's far cheaper than test-tube baby surgery, which requires complicated procedures like approving, verifying, and sampling.
