Multiple Births Doubled in Nanjing for the past 6 Years

According to gross estimates by Liu Jiayin, vice President of Jiangsu maternity and child care centers, there were only one pair of twins out of every 200 deliveries 30 years ago, but it's two out of every 100 now. "It has increased by 4 times for the past 30 years." In Jiangsu maternity and child care centers: 31 cases of twin births in 2005 (2474 cases of delivery), 56 cases of twin births and 3 cases of triplets in 2006 (2987 cases of delivery), 51 cases of twin births in 2007 (4097 cases of delivery), 87 cases of twin births in 2008 (3825 cases of delivery), 86 cases of twin births and 1 case of triplets in 2009 (3435 cases of delivery).

One case of twins in every 40 deliveries

Yesterday, reporters had an investigation on the twins (much afterbirth) data from 2004 to 2009 in three companies qualified for test-tube surgeries. 

Nanjing maternity and child care centers: 86 cases in 2004, 91 cases in 2005 (including 1 triplets), 102 cases in 2006 (including 2 triplets), 136 cases in 2007 (including 1 triplets), 148 cases in 2008 (including 1 triplets), 167 cases in 2009 (including 3 triplets).

It is roughly calculated that the multiple births have more than doubled in the past six years.

Gulou hospital: from 2004 to 2009, the ration of twins (much afterbirth) over total delivery was: 1.6%, 1.8%, 1.4%, 2%, 1.6% and 1.9%.
